Are White Kitchens On The Way Out?

I wish I had a dollar for every time some one asked me that question. I have been designing kitchens for over 40 years and that question has come up since day one. The simplest and fastest answer to that question is a strong “NO”. I don’t think white kitchens will ever be out. I can show you pictures of white kitchens (both traditional and contemporary) from over 70 years ago.

In the recent past, white was supposed to be replaced by various shades of grey and then various shades of blue. While we saw grey and blue kitchens, neither became the “new white”. White goes with everything. And there are infinite numbers of white, from a white white to a grey white or a blue white or a cream colored white.

You can add almost any color to white and it works well. A second color can be used to accessorize – with counter tops or back splash or decorative pieces. Or you can do two-color kitchen cabinetry. I think white is here to stay. While it wains in popularity, white will always be a “standard color” for kitchen cabinetry.
